R.I.P. Fat Beats

18 Aug

Fat Beats, one of New York City’s most recognized icons of hip-hop culture, announced today the closing of its remaining retail locations. The famed record shop, which has been in operation for 16 years, will say farewell to its two storefronts here in New York and in Los Angeles.

While the physical locations will no longer exist, Fat Beats has big plans for further developing its online retail presence and wholesale distribution to meet the needs of their demographic.

“This is the start of a new era in Fat Beats,” Joe Abajian Fat Beats owner and president said. “We’re proud of our legacy and will continue to re-invent ourselves. For now, we’ll see you online at FatBeats.com”

Fat Beats won’t go out in a whisper, but will be hosting several tribute events to mark the milestone in both New York and LA.

“The closing of Fat Beats is just like one of my friends passing away,” said DJ Premier in a recent statement. “They promoted vinyl at its highest degree for the culture of good music and that makes it more difficult to say goodbye.”

You know what they say: when god closes a retail location he opens an online store. Best of luck to everyone at Fat Beats — we will truly miss you!
