Total Fashion Recall: Aaliyah

16 Jan

Today marks what would be the 32nd birthday of Aaliyah Dana Haughton, immortalized in a gentle voice and piercing lyrics that would later distinguish her against the backdrop of contemporary R&B and hip-hop. Not only was Aaliyah a born star of the stage performing since the age of five, but also a rising screen star appearing in martial arts film Romeo Must Die and as Queen Akasha in adaptation of Anne Rice’s vampire novel, Queen of the Damned.

Aaliyah’s quiet confidence translated fluidly into her sense of style, and her ability to strike a balance between tomboyishness and feline femininity earned Aaliyah an iconic status in fashion that lives on today. Performing almost exclusively in a unique mixture of baggy menswear and sexy, midrif-exposing fitted pieces, Aaliyah often shocked red carpets in ultra-feminine looks. And who could forget those trademark bangs? Aaliyah’s famous shyness inspired those one-eye shielding bangs and sunglasses, which later lifted slightly as she matured.

See how you can infuse Aaliyah’s timeless, spunky-meets-seductive style into your wardrobe with these pieces and accessories…
