Yves-Saint Laurent’s “Quiet Revolution” Rages On In Jourdan Dunn Campaign

18 Jan

Hugely influential French luxury brand Yves-Saint Laurent continues to step in the right direction with its newest ad campaign featuring British model Jourdan Dunn. Shot by fashion photographer Terry Richardson, Dunn appears as the newest face of YSL’s cosmetics line in the brand’s “Touche Eclat Lumiere” highlighter ad campaign.

While the ad itself is visually-arresting, showcasing the radiant Dunn smokey-eyed and bare-shouldered against a decadent golden textile, it is also an extremely optimistic indicator of things to come both for the brand and the industry at-large.

Credited as the first major designer to frankly address race issues within the fashion industry, Yves-Saint Laurent sparked a “quiet French Revolution” nearly 50 years ago by featuring the first black models to appear on Paris runways and high-fashion print campaigns. Opening doors for the careers of models such as Iman, Pat Cleveland, Tyra Banks, and Veronica Webb, the late couturier was also cited by Naomi Campbell in 2008 as the driving force behind her groundbreaking French Vogue cover.

Twenty year-old Jordan Dunn is no stranger to facing race issues within the fashion industry herself. In 2008, a then 17 year-old Dunn made headlines as the first black runway model to walk in a Prada show in over a decade, and has since worked to bring attention to the lack of diverse racial and ethnic representation in the industry.

Yves-Saint Laurent not only challenged beauty standards by including a racially diverse cast of models, but also considered women of all colors when designing his line of high-end cosmetics.

Jordan Dunn’s appearance in the “Touche Eclat Lumiere” cosmetics campaign is hopeful proof that Yves-Saint Laurent’s vision — one of racial-inclusivity and accessibility for all women — is successfully being implemented in his brand even after his passing. Those participating in the industry should hope to see design houses and luxury brands following in YSL’s path, ultimately aspiring to a climate reflective of the multitude of colors their habitués come in.

Fresh Prints: Missoni Spring/Summer 2011

18 Jan

Italian fashion house Missoni certainly seems to be jumping on the color-blocking print bandwagon this season with the release of their Spring/Summer 2011 video ad campaign. The collection exhibits the luxury brand’s signature pallate of vivacious hues in fresh geometric prints and patterns. Missoni’s video is just as vibrant and fun as its collection featuring an inclusive cast and a short cameo around 0:49 of actress Leighton Meester.

No Doubt frontwoman and L.A.M.B. designer Gwen Stefani is joining the ranks of Jennifer Lopez, Eva Longoria and Beyoncé Knowles as the next face of L’Oreal Paris. “I can’t believe I get to be one of the L’Oréal Paris girls,” says the singer, “I love playing dress up, on stage or shooting videos, it’s always been one of my favorite parts of being in a band.”

Stefani, who’s made crimson lips her trademark signature, will make her first appearance in a campaign for L’Oreal Paris Infallible Le Rouge lip color during this Sunday’s Golden Globes.

Image from Rihanna’s Fragrance Ad Surfaces

5 Jan

Rihanna announced last month that she would be launching a personal fragrance, Reb’l Fleur, named after her grammatically-controversial neck tattoo. An image from the perfume’s ad campaign surfaced today, featuring a sultry shot of Rihanna topless in an unbuttoned blush blazer jacket, smokey eyes, and soft waves in her now-trademark scarlet locks. No word has been released on what the fragrance might smell like or when it’s set to launch just yet.

4 Jan

Tom Ford is having a great year so far. Only days — no, hours — after unveiling his dreamy Spring ’11 women’s runway collection video, the Oscar-nominated director and designer debuts this killer eyewear campaign. Featuring model Abbey Lee Kershaw, Ford’s designs take on yet another vintage-cum-modernist appeal with oversized cateye frames, futuristic shades, and a chunky onyx take on men’s classic Wayfarers.

Everything in the collection looks super sleek, and I especially love the giant crystal necklace against Kershaw’s perfectly coordinated scarlet lips and manicure. View the full campaign after the jump… Continue reading

Scarlett Johannson and Olivia Palermo for Mango Fall and Winter ’10

1 Nov

Two new ad campaigns from Spanish brand Mango were released today for the Fall-Winter ’10 shopping season featuring reality TV’s Olivia Palermo and the alway-sultry Scarlett Johannson.

Fall ‘1o features two shots of Olivia Palermo and her beau, German model Johannes Huebl, enjoying a mundane-yet-glamourous life. You know, eating dinner, walking up some stairs…

Clearly the real news here, of course, is Scarlet Johannson’s spread — six shots of the film siren decked-out in Mango’s Winter ’10 collection. Need I say more?

Palermo and Johannson definitely lend an air of old-world class and superiority in both campaigns, making the Fall and Winter lines seem more sumptuous than ever. Check out the rest of the ads after the jump… Continue reading
